Bella

Keller

Keller is available for sponsorship only, see our Sponsor Program information at http://animalrefugecenter.org/services/sponsor-program/ Keller is 4 year old pittie who was found roaming the streets in Owensboro and was picked up by animal control. While in their shelter he was a handful to say the least, as he is not only very young, but also deaf. Since coming to ARC, staff has been working on teaching Keller how to communicate using basic hand signs and leash cues. Working with Keller and his unique needs have been a learning experience for the ARC staff, as we are by no means skilled in advance dog training. Despite our shortfalls, Keller has shown us that he is a very intelligent dog. He has learned to "sit" and is slowly learning signs for "off", "wait", and "leave it". Keller does very well with other dogs at ARC and is currently best buds with Hank. Keller getting better about on a harness but is easily distracted by the sights around him, through frequent walks in known and new places, he is showing improvement. Keller is a very happy guy and is so eager to please. He is very treat motivated, and this has allowed him to take on a number of adventures, like hikes, car rides, and trips to the park! Keller would thrive with having training from a professional or just someone who can do one on one with him on a regular and frequent basis. Above all, he is a really great dog with personality that goes for miles. He is looking for someone with the patience, time and resources to help him blossom in his silent world. Keller would do best with a dog of his own energy level, and who is relatively submissive. Due to his size and excitement level, a home with older children and no cats would be best. Keller is marked as not housetrained because to our knowledge, he has spent all of his life either as a stray or at our facility, which consists of outdoor dog kennels. He will definitely need some house training, to include home manners.

Ace

Woof! Hey there, I'm Ace, and I've got quite the story to tell. You see, I wasn't always living the ruff life. I was caught up in a tough situation-a hoarding situation, to be exact. The woman in charge was charged with animal cruelty, and rightfully so. It was a tough time for all of us. In that chaotic environment, I didn't have much structure or love. It was a struggle just to survive each day. But despite everything, I held onto hope. And now, here I am, ready to turn over a new leaf and find my forever home. Sure, I might have some trust issues, especially when it comes to sharing my toys. Can you blame me after what I've been through? But deep down, I'm still that intelligent, confident guy who's eager to learn and eager to love. If you don't have some patience, I may not be the one for you. At 6 years old, I've seen my fair share of hardships, but I haven't lost my spirit. I'm already neutered and ready to start fresh with a family who understands my breed and is willing to give me the love and patience I need to thrive. So if you're up for the challenge of helping me heal and grow, I promise to repay you with endless loyalty and affection. Let's leave the past behind us and start a new chapter together. Are you ready to give this survivor the loving home he deserves? The adoption fee includes age appropriate vaccinations and deworming, Frontline application, spay or neuter surgery, collar, ID tag and a leash. A $35 (non-refundable) deposit will hold the pet for you for 5 days. Call 803-536-3918 for more information or email at: aro.spca@outlook.com. 5/2/24 4:39 PM

Her favorite toy is a fabric-covered ball as she can pick it up with her paws and toss it around. Duchess may be shy in new surroundings, but with time to explore she will find comfort. Her ideal family is one with older children; a home that is fairly calm. Duchess tolerates adult cats, may hiss as those that get in her space; she is nurturing to young cats. I get along with dogs who are friendly and have good manners, although I will admit I like being the leader. I had a home but I was not happy there and I escaped the yard every chance I got. My mom was very ill and she did not have time for me. So I went looking for another home. That’s how I ended up in rescue. I promise not to run away if you love me and pay attention to me, and give me treats when I am a good dog. I am crate trained and house trained. I am 6-7 years old and weigh 50 lbs. My fur has a gorgeous shimmer and don’t you just love my baby blues? The ideal home for Roxy would have Husky experience. Grover (Sponsored)

This sweet fellow was rescued from a kill shelter, and Grover was one terrified kitty when he arrived at the Refuge. It tugged at our heart strings to see how frightened he was; we have no idea what he had gone through before he came to the safety of the Refuge. He wasn't feral or aggressive - just very, very scared. Slowly but surely, Grover has relaxed and while he's still skittish, he's no longer terrified, and that's progress! He needs some more work with his socialization, but he is definitely open to the idea of being friends with people. When you speak to Grover, he answers with a most charming 'silent meow' that will melt your heart. We would love for Grover to meet his special person who will give him a loving home and help him discover his Inner lap cat. APPROX DOB: 3/19/2009

Birdie

DSH- Sleek black and white coat. White legs, chest and belly area. Black saddle, tail and cap. ADULT MALE; Est DOB: April 2016 ARRIVAL: November 9, 2018 HISTORY: Birdie found himself in need of a new home when he was no longer getting along with the other cats in his home. When added him to our Sanctuary when space became available. Did the name Birdie come first or did the cat tree? Ahh, that is the big question for which no one really seems to have an answer. Our good friend Birdie is almost perpetually hanging out in the top of the cat tree to the left of the door as you exit to his patio area. A Bird in a tree, right? To the left of him, you are likely to find his sweet, quiet confidant Willow, the tabby cat. Birdie will happily give you head butts and then gracefully hop on down to sashay figure 8’s in between and around your legs. He enjoys laps, being held and loved on BUT the key is that he needs to know you! Staff and longer term volunteers gush about how fabulously loving and affectionate Birdie is. He has quite the fan club of admirers! He really does love his people, but he needs a bit of time to get to know you. Birdie has done well with the other cats in his room but does not seek them out per say and can act as a bit of loner around most of them. He quietly goes about his daily business and slowly builds his fan base hoping soon to find that one person who wishes to be his new, full time friend. Update Winter 2024: For the most part, "bully" Birdie has been a good roommate to the others in his room. With a reputation to swat and be less than nice to those around him, more recently he's not had just a huge amount of timeouts in his condo. We might add that consistently he is a friend and actually amicable towards Cole, a senior kitty in his room. Way to go big guy!! Birdie is on a regular call cycle with one of our cat volunteers and he literally cries out when his friend Scott enters the room. How rewarding for both Birdie and Scott! Birdie enjoys all over body rubs from Scott and no matter how hard Scott might try, Birdie will give a polite "No thanks" when encouraged to join in a group game of laser dot. Despite his at times ill behavior, still Birdie makes us smile and we're honored to have him under our care. Update Fall 2022: "Birdie is my buddy," explains Cat Volunteer Scott. "He immediately comes trotting over when I enter his room and then when I'm seated, he circles around me looking for some love and attention. If only I had more arms to give him even more pets." Certainly, it's heartwarming to hear one of our volunteers gushing about one of our residents. In a room where several of the cats are a bit shy, it's easy for Birdie to stand out and collect all the attention as folks come calling. Birdie has become more anxious around his roommates so we are tinkering with different meds to help curb his anxiety. He's been particularly bossy when it's communal feeding time so he's put into his condo during this time frame and also for overnights. Birdie looks forward to enjoying the fall color show and the cooler temps. Update Fall 2023: Our good friend Birdie has surely been tested over the last couple months as some newer and very much younger kitties have been added into "his" room and "his" space! The good news is that Birdie has not been too much of a bully to teen "sapling" kitties, Oak, Elm and Ash in part because he's finally taking his calming meds and we also think he might be a bit scared of their erratic behavior! Coupled with humans on hand to help redirect him and keep him content with one on one attention and plenty of pets, he's been overall a good boy! He's earned as good a report card relative to his behavior as we can remember. Lol. Birdie is healthy and with no emerging health issues, we'll look forward to him enjoying the delightful fall temps and perhaps an even higher degree of tolerance with his new roommates. You've got this Birdie!

Cera

ORANGE TABBY; White around mouth and neck area. ADULT FEMALE; Est DOB: 4/20/2019 ARRIVAL: 6/7/ 2019 HISTORY: Cera was trapped with her sibling Hermione (adopted!) in a local colony of cats and together sought refuge here at CFC. The key to my heart right now is having a cat or other cats to help me be at my best. When I see staff members or longer term volunteers coming my way, I will happily hop down off my condo perch and glide towards them to welcome them into my space. I am a sweet, gentle natured lady but losing out on some key early on socialization as a baby has left me a bit shy and uncertain around strangers. Once I know you, you’ll see I have a playful, fun side to me that will quickly have you coming back for a second helping of wonderful me! If you have time and patience and an extra cat or two, I’d love for you to consider me. Even if you don’t have other felines, I’d be happy to hook you up with my super best friend Fred (he’s next to me in some of the pictures) and in no time, we would all be best of friends. Winter 2024 Update: "I'm ok letting Volunteer Scott pet me but if I had my druthers, I might really prefer that he give me a wee bit more space and not touch my tempting coat," explains our sunny faced, tabby girl CERA. And so it goes with our shy and timid friend. It's all good though as Scott only briefly has contact with her and for the balance of her day, she can enjoy and really, revel in hanging close by her bestie Casey. More recently, Patsy Cline has been spotted enjoying Cera's company so perhaps her circle of friends is ever so slowly enlarging. Most typically, Cera can be found relaxing on the top of a condo as her preference is to lead a less active and less social (as it relates to humans) lifestyle. We're honored to be the ones in charge of Cera's care and respect her desire for privacy. She's in great health and in good spirits so we'll look forward to her enjoying the extra wafts of warm air as it migrates upward to the condo top on these chilly winter days. Fall 2023 Update: Cera has a new tag line from one of her volunteer human admirers, "Synchronized Snoozer." Like most kitties, Cera excels at napping but our cautious lady more and more is apt to be intertwined and sharing body heat with her good friend Casey. Casey, also a more shy girl, and Cera are rarely found alone and what a joy it is to witness the comfort they find in each other. Cera is almost never spotted off the top of a condo but we know she's getting down as she's maintaining a more robust physique and getting in some good snackin'. Healthy and happy, Cera goes about her daily business with Casey by her side and wants for nothing. Content and quiet, we're honored to have her under our care.

Beans

Beans is the most athletic pitbull you will find here! He plays soccer with you, and can fly through the air. Beans fetches perfectly, gives you the ball, and sits patiently. Beans really, really love soccer, but can easily learn more advanced games, like frisbee. He also plays fetch in the water! He greets dogs well on a leash, and occasionally likes to play with other dogs. He does not want to live with other dogs, and prefers to play with humans. Beans likes chew toys, and does not suffer from separation anxiety. He is not overly cuddly - he prefers play, but is affectionate and excited towards his humans. Beans had an issue meeting new people when he first came to us - this is now resolved, and he feels confident within a few minutes of meeting someone new. Beans is one year old and healthy. He is up to date on vaccines, dewormer and heartworm prevention, and had been neutered. rebeldogsdetroit.com/applytoadopt
